CMU 2010 Overview
Where we’ve been…
CMU 2010 has been the strategic plan of the university since
fall of 2005. In a nutshell, the purpose of a strategic plan is to
focus our attention and commit resources (money, time, effort, etc.)
to our greatest institutional goals. In which areas does CMU hope
to improve for our students in the next 5 years? In the next 10
years? Once we determine what we value most, we try to create
opportunities for improvement in these areas long-term. Since CMU
2010 is our Vision for the university, the president has shown his
support by providing $5 million to be spent to help us reach our
ultimate goal – to create a strong, national reputation for CMU.
What’s happening now…
In this strategic plan, our five greatest “Priorities” are
Teaching & Learning, Diversity & Global Perspectives, Research &
Creative Activity, Service for the Public Good, and Culture of
Integrity. Over the last few years, there has been a flurry of
activity on campus to help us reach our strategic goals, including
projects that have directly impacted, and in many cases included,
our students.
Of the total $5 million budgeted for use on CMU 2010, we have already dedicated $4.3 million on 28 projects, since many of them span over multiple years with varying budget requirements. In most cases, money can be helpful to get a project off the ground, but projects that have not received funding can also be successful in achieving national prominence. It is important to make the distinction that strategic planning does not require money, but it does require a focused effort toward reaching our goals.
These changes have:
-
created new offices and centers to provide more hands-on opportunities for learning
-
provided the means for CMU to better understand our strengths and challenges when it comes to diversity
-
allowed for improved campus facilities to strengthen the infrastructure for research
-
developed stronger partnerships with external organizations and community engagement
-
“raised the bar” in terms of academic integrity
These outcomes only represent the tip of the iceberg in terms of what CMU has accomplished under the CMU 2010 strategic plan. Feel free to read the spotlights on our CMU 2010 homepage (planning.cmich.edu) for additional projects.
Where we’re going…
As previously mentioned, the university has yet to commit
roughly $700,000 dollars to seed further opportunities for
improvement. This fall, new project proposal will be collected and
a decision made early the following fall (2009) for the distribution
of the funding. We should see yet another “boom” of new activity
related to CMU 2010 in next few years.
As the name indicates, the plan known as CMU 2010 is only intended to extend through June 2010. While the plan may “expire,” our goals, values, and institutional priorities will not. CMU will continue to improve teaching and learning, diversity, research, and public service, as these are all established outcomes within our mission. We will continue to plan strategically, and in the month of October we have scheduled 6 focus groups with any interested staff members across campus. In late October and early November, we hope to ask students to join us in this efforts by coming together to have a voice in determining what issues REALLY should be represented in the next plan. A schedule will be posted as it becomes available.
