Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is strategic planning?
Are we doing the right things? That is what we must ask
ourselves when making decisions about CMU’s future. Strategic
planning is intentional, long-term, goal-setting that helps us
become the best we can be. Ultimately, this long range planning
boils down to deciding not only what to do, but how to do it, and
why it’s being done.
How long has CMU 2010 been in place?
CMU 2010 has been our 5-year strategic plan, beginning in
the Fall 2005 and will end June 30, 2010.
What can CMU 2010 do for me?
The ultimate purpose of CMU 2010 is to improve the
experience students are already receiving. By aspiring to
nationally prominence, students attending CMU can be even more
confident that the reputation of the university makes them
appealing to future employers and/or institutions of further
education. Each of the priorities offer more specific examples of
what CMU is doing for you, from providing more opportunities to
conduct new, state-of-the-art research, to continuing to build upon
CMU’s leadership in area of public service. A better question might
be, “What isn’t CMU 2010 doing for you?”
Why should I care about CMU 2010?
CMU 2010 has always been driven by our students, and while
we try to create these opportunities, it’s up to you to take a
chance and get involved. It is important that you are aware that
your university is planning for your future by planning for CMU’s
future. We’re not just trying to give you any degree, we’re
trying to give you the strongest possible credentials to improve
your marketability in your future endeavors and your overall
satisfaction in attending CMU.
Besides, most organizations in the "real world" have a strategic plan - either explicitly written or implicitly understood - that outlines their future directions. Understanding what they are and how they serve the company is a valuable skill you can use beyond CMU. Your involvement as a student can help you as you encounter strategic plans in your career. This is particularly true for students in business and management, although many others would benefit just as well.
How do I get involved?
Three ways:
-
Many of the projects funded by CMU 2010 involve students from a variety of disciplines. Contact the project leaders if there is a CMU 2010 project in your area of interest to see if you can become a part.
-
We’re always looking for student voices in our planning efforts! While many of the decisions for this strategic plan have been determined, 2010 is right around the corner. We’ll be looking to collect your input on what you think is most important to your education for the next strategic plan, what we're currently referring to as "Beyond 2010." Watch for updates!
-
Your CMU experience is what you make of it. We hope you take advantage of the opportunities we are trying to create and develop by playing an active role in your education. Get engaged in your classes. Look for ways to participate in groups on campus. Go above and beyond to enjoy the fruits of our labors!
